Rains and overflows affect the Hot Springs area in Nuquí

Authorities are on alert due to the overflow of two streams in the district of Termales, a tourist destination in the municipality of Nuquí, in Chocó.

The streams have been affected by heavy rains and there are fears that tourism will be affected during the holiday season.

The water currents from the Aguas Calientes and Ostiones streams in Nuquí have caused damage to businesses and homes, endangering the inhabitants of this district.

The governor of Chocó, Nubia Córdoba Curi, visited the site to coordinate actions and deliveries of humanitarian aid, technical assistance and evaluation of the mitigation work, with the aim of avoiding future overflows and protecting the community.

The governor said that “we are here with emergency humanitarian support for the inhabitants of this town who have had to spend the last three weeks fighting against the floods due to the rains of the Aguas Calientes and Ostiones streams, which when they join at the mouth to reach to the sea they generate a mouth that, due to the clogging of these, has opened a new channel that unfortunately is threatening to take away the town of Termales.”

Within the framework of risk management actions on the Pacific coast, the actions to be carried out with yellow machinery brought from Buenaventura are evaluated to intervene appropriately and prevent future emergencies due to the rainy season in the department of Chocó.

The Risk Management Unit announced that it will provide yellow machinery to correct the course of the streams in Nuquí.

The inhabitants of this town indicated that in addition to infrastructure works, it is important to implement reforestation programs in the area.

Likewise, there is concern because there is a danger that the overflows will sweep away homes in the area.

The mayor of Nuquí, Rubén Prado Asprilla, stated that they are waiting for the yellow machinery from the National Risk Management Unit to be able to correct the channel of these streams as defined in a risk management council carried out. carried out in the municipality of Istmina.
