More than a thousand hectares of crops have been affected in Pinar del Río due to the persistent rains that hit western Cuba during the last 20 days.

Ortelio Rodríguez Perogurría, subdelegate of Agriculture in Vueltabajo, explained that the municipalities that have reported the most damage to date are Consolación del Sur, Sandino and Guane.

However, he warned that the figures being used are preliminary and should be increased as all the sites that were left under water can be reached.

The official specified that the main damage is concentrated in food, with about 430 hectares, and grains, with 368, mainly corn; In addition, in about 230 hectares of vegetables. Among the crops hardest hit he mentioned sweet potato, cassava and pumpkin.

Rodríguez Perogurría assured that work is being done quickly to rescue all the food that can be used from the field and send it immediately to the markets.

On the other hand, an evaluation is carried out to know the availability of crops in the fields, in order to know how much could be harvested in the coming months, and to draw up planting strategies.

In Pinar del Río, around 20,000 hectares of various crops had been planted so far within the framework of the spring campaign, out of a plan of more than 35,000 planned for the campaign.
