Willy Topp (38), at some point syndicated as one of the great projects of Universidad Católica and from Chilean soccer, he retired from soccer many years ago, while playing in Europe.

For five years now, Topp has lived in the United States. Today he is a coach and currently directs the Philadelphia Union Under 13, one of the most powerful teams in the MLS.

This Tuesday, Willy and a friend traveled by car to New Jersey to watch La Roja against Argentina. Upon leaving the venue, the former Chilean footballer spoke with AS about the Copa América match (Read the first part of the interview here)but also about his new life in North America.

– Willy, how is your work at Philadelphia Union going?

– The work is good, I am happy. We already finished the season and my series did quite well. If we didn’t have any talented players at the beginning of the year, this season we found two or three who can make a difference in the distant future. In the end, what we are looking for at the club is not to form a team, but to train talents so that they arrive and make their debut in the first team. At the moment I don’t know, but there is a possibility of starting with older players and having a second team at the end of the year. We are considering options in the same club.

-How is life in the United States?

– Life in the United States is quite intense. From home to work it is 45 minutes or an hour without traffic, with traffic you add at least 15 more minutes. I mean, it’s two and a half hours a day driving to work and on that side it’s intense. I’m already used to it, but it’s still exhausting no matter how much one is mentally prepared. I would like to make a change at some point, but I have grown as a coach, I am learning another language, I am sharing with former professional players from Europe and sports directors who have coached the Scottish national team. I’m learning a lot from a lot of people.

“I follow Chilean football and one day I would like to go”

– Do you miss Chile?

– What I miss most is my family. I follow Chilean football and obviously one day I would like to go, but what I really miss is family and friends. Maybe one day I will have the chance to go to national football.
