The Argentine qualifier to access the 2025 Youth World Weightlifting Championship will be held in Corrientes and there will be two representatives from the province in the competition.
Domingo Meza and Martina Jiménez, who recently participated in the South American and Pan American Youth Championships in Palmira, Colombia, will be part of the qualifier and will seek to represent Argentina at the World Cup.
“We are very happy for the great work of the boys in Colombia and I am now in a position to confirm that the qualifier for next year’s World Cup will be held in Corrientes,” said coach Marcelo Fernández in the “Era por Abajo” program on Radio Unne.
Fernández is the director of Corrientes Pesas and was one of the coaches of the Argentine national team in the competition in Colombia.
“We have to decide on the venue, but we want to hold the competition at the (Manuel Vicente) Figuerero School because there are many kids who compete in weightlifting there and it’s like our home,” he added.
The qualifying competition, which will involve five athletes, will award two places, one for men and one for women, for next year’s World Championships.
Meza, 17 years old, 55kg category, won three gold medals at the South American level and three gold medals at the Pan American Championships in Colombia that were held from the 20th to the 24th of this month.
Her records were: snatch 99 kg, clean and jerk 125 kg and total 224 kg. These marks also allowed her to win three silver medals in the Senior category.
“It was a historic event for the sport of the Province. Meza is the first Pan American champion in his discipline representing the National Team,” said Fernandez, who highlighted
For her part, Martina Jiménez (category up to 64 kg.) achieved fifth place, improving her international record. In the snatch she lifted 88 kg, in the clean and jerk 95 kg and the total was 201 kg.
Meanwhile, Agustina Álvarez won three bronze medals in the senior division up to 55kg.
