Due to the winter storm, the levels of the Magdalena River have risen considerably in various areas of the department of Magdalena, generating permanent alert among the riverside towns. This situation has caused concern among both residents and local authorities, who are implementing preventive measures to protect the population and mitigate the risks of possible flooding.
According to the measurement by the IDEAM Fluviometric Station, managed by the River Inspection of the Ministry of Transportation, the port of El Banco has experienced an increase of 5 centimeters in the level of the Magdalena River in the last 24 hours.
In the El Cerrito del Banco district, the community is alarmed by the imminent danger their homes face due to the rising water level. Images can be seen on social media where homes are just a few meters from the riverbank, whose level continues to rise. The population has urged the relevant authorities to take immediate action to protect their homes.
In the municipality of Plato, the population is on high alert due to the rising river, forcing some residents to seek refuge in local institutions. In San Sebastián de Buenavista, several families have been affected by the floods, which have damaged homes and crops, with water reaching more than a metre in height in some cases.
In addition, communities such as Sábanas de Peralejo, Buenavista, Vereda la Isla, Los Galvis, among other sectors, have suffered serious consequences, including damage to infrastructure such as the Moja Albarca bridge.
In Salamina, Mayor Edwin Pabón has urgently requested the intervention of the National Risk and Disaster Management Unit and the national government, in view of the growing risk arising from the rise in the level of the Magdalena River and its devastating impact on coastal erosion. This situation represents a threat to the safety of more than 8,000 inhabitants of the municipality.
