Why do you get hungrier when it’s cold? These are the scientific reasons

Have you ever felt hungrier every time it gets colder? Well, yes, it seems that the connection between low temperatures and the consumption of high-calorie foods has several possible reasons.

Chocolates, desserts, stews and soups are part of the dishes that most people seek to consume on these occasions.

For PhD candidate Megan Lee and Professor of Allied Health Jacqui Yoxall at Southern Cross University, the digestive system communicates with the brain and if you eat foods like pasta, chocolate and soups, dopamine and serotonin are produced.

The explanation was given through an article published in The Conversation, where they indicated that dopamine and serotonin are considered neurotransmitters of happiness, because they produce a feeling of well-being.

Foods you should eat

The Cleveland Clinic advises eating carrots, beets and turnips, which can satisfy your appetite.

There are also foods rich in vitamin D, such as shiitake mushrooms, salmon, egg yolks, red meat and milk. Oatmeal is another versatile food, to which you can add spices of all kinds.

Another representative food during the cold season is soups. Experts, according to Infobae, recommend chicken or vegetable broth. To add fat-free protein and fiber, choose to include vegetables, beans or lentils.

“Protein and fiber curb appetite by slowing digestion and controlling blood sugar levels. This can help control hunger and boost mood,” they said.

The fruits that they also recommend are kiwis, lemons, oranges and mangoes, which are rich in vitamin C. Broccoli and cauliflower are also included in this group.

Experts from the University of Valencia mentioned that an adult in extreme cold situations can burn up to 500 calories per hour.

“Fat has a high concentration of mitochondria and its function is to burn energy to give it to the body and maintain its heat,” they explained.
