History of the National College of Jujuy

He The National College of Jujuy dates back to the 1860s., with the initial purpose of providing secondary education and preparing future professionals in the province. Through a decree of President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, dated February 16, 1869, a National House of Studies was established with an educational plan similar to that of the National Colleges. Dr. José Benito de la Bárcena was appointed as its first director and in 1875 the first five high school graduates graduated.

Initially located in the residence of the Villar Pérez Zegada family on Calle Real (today Belgrano), the institution moved to several locations before finally settling in its current headquarters in 1934, in the block delimited by Canónigo Gorriti, Belgrano, Urquiza and Argañaraz streets.

During the presidency of Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear, by decree of July 27, 1928, the institution adopted the name of Colegio Nacional “Teodoro Sánchez de Bustamante”, in honor of the Jujuy patriot noted for his role in national emancipation. In 2015, the building was declared a National Historic Monument by decree 16/2015.

In addition to its academic curriculum, the school offers various extracurricular activities such as the “Carlos Darwin” Museum of Natural Sciences, the Friends of Nature Club, and the “Nicolás Avellaneda” Library, among others, enriching the comprehensive education of its students.
