Founding origin

The origin of the University of Valparaíso dates back to the first half of the last century, in response to the educational needs of the population and the convictions of local leaders regarding the importance of secular and pluralistic higher education training in Valparaíso. Although the first academic programs—which date back to 1911, with the Fiscal Law Course—were supervised by the University of Chile from Santiago, there was no relationship of dependency or coordination on the part of that house of studies.

For this reason, between 1965 and 1967, the idea of an autonomous headquarters prospered in the university community, which led to the formation of the United Reform Commission, whose corollary is the historic “Assembly of the university community of Valparaíso”, a three-state convocation that It took place on June 15, 1968, in the Aula Magna of the Law School.

From that event, de facto and symbolically, a new university institution emerged: the Valparaíso campus of the University of Chile.
