The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, spoke this Friday with a representation of residents of the Primero de Mayo community, belonging to the Cienfuegos municipality of Aguada de Pasajeros.

The Cuban president was interested in issues such as popular control over the operation of manufacturing processes in under-utilized mini-industries in the settlement, the production of goods and services, as well as the recovery of agricultural activities of yesteryear in the district.

Maria Teresita González Sardiñas, president of the “Perseverancia” People’s Council, explained the food shortages in the area, where formal employment should be encouraged for this purpose, as well as contracts with agricultural producers.

The Primero de Mayo community has about a thousand inhabitants, with an aging population, which, Díaz-Canel said, requires differentiated attention in line with its demographic dynamics.

The Cuban president visited the Vietnam Basic Cooperative Production Unit, where workers are working to increase sugarcane yields.

Luis Alfonso López, Head of Production, reported that the entity has more than 2,900 hectares in the process of cultivating sugar cane and there are only 1,700 hectares with a low yield – only 32 tons per hectare – and the contribution of the grass to the Antonio Sánchez sugar agroindustrial company amounted to 40,000 tons.

Díaz-Canel also participated in the conclusions of the visit of the auxiliary structure of the PCC to the westernmost municipality of the province.
