Tons of disused equipment that occupied extensive spaces and contributed to pollution in educational institutions are sent to companies specialized in the use and recycling of technological scrap.

Among the technological waste recently collected are VHS, televisions, monitors, printers, recorders, mice, keyboards, toner, tablets, power supplies and CD players, equipment that, due to reaching its useful life, was collected for final disposal. , in accordance with legal requirements.

The Yopal Education Department made the decision to remove these wastes from the premises of the 24 educational institutions. These wastes contain elements such as cadmium, lead, lead oxide, antimony, nickel and mercury, among other toxic elements, which contaminate spaces, rivers, lakes and seas, and emit gases into the atmosphere that cause imbalances in ecosystems.

“By participating in this initiative, ecological awareness is promoted among young people, while necessary spaces are enabled for academic and recreational activities,” explained David Díaz Sánchez, Secretary of Education of Yopal, to Boyacá Seven Days.

The official added that when a product, such as a cell phone, computer or other electronic device, no longer works and cannot be used by someone close to it, recycling should be the option. An alternative for the consumer is to hand in the old device to the establishment where they bought the new one or to a company that is dedicated to electronic reconditioning.

This collection of technological waste is being carried out in stages. In the first, equipment was received from the educational institutions Centro Social, La Esmeralda, Itey, Megacolegio El Progreso and Lucila Piragauta, obtaining the equivalent of three tons of unusable equipment.

Likewise, it is planned that, once classes restart, after the vacation period this same process will be carried out in La Chaparrera, El Charte, Morichal and in the educational institutions of Luis Hernández Vargas and Braulio González.
