Latin American lawmakers demand end to blockade against Cuba

Based in Panama since 2006, Parlatino was represented by its president, Deputy Rolando González, at the meeting of the Expanded Board of Directors of the Latin American Component of Eurolat, held in Cochabamba.

The text delivered to this news agency states that the signatories join the declaration of the VIII Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) held on March 1.

At that forum, the heads of state decided to “reiterate the call of the United Nations General Assembly to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade” of the United States Government against the Caribbean island.

He adds that this set of reprisals, in addition to being contrary to international law, causes serious damage to the well-being of the Cuban people.

The legislators also reiterated their rejection of unilateral lists and certifications that affect Latin American and Caribbean countries.

In this regard, they requested “the exclusion of Cuba from the unilateral list of countries that allegedly sponsor international terrorism.”

“As representatives of our peoples, we firmly support the right of each nation to self-determination and to forge its own historical and democratic process (…)”, they warned.

The document ratifies that the previous conquests cannot entail sanctions or economic blockades “that impact the quality of life of our communities, their well-being and their sovereign right to a good life.”

Among the signatories of the document are also the vice presidents of the Southern Parliament (Parlasur) and the Andean Parliament (Parlandino).

The meeting reviewed the agenda with a view to the next Plenary Session of that Parliamentary Assembly.

The meeting was attended by the co-president for the Latin American Component of Eurolat, deputy Amado Cerrud; and the president of Parlasur, parliamentarian Fabiana Martín.

Also present were the co-president of the Economic Commission, Senator Ricardo Velázquez Meza; the co-president of the Social Affairs Commission, Deputy Adolfo Mendoza; and legislator Leandro Ávila, Alternate Secretary of the Parlatino Commissions.

The next Eurolat session will be held in a Latin American country, it was reported, although it was not specified which one.
