Viviana Burgos Valenzuela and Rosa Salamanca Conalef made history in Chile by becoming the first Mapuche marriage between people of the same sex, almost a year after the approval of homosexual marriage in the country.

The two women, aged 43 and 44, respectively, were married on February 23 in a civil ceremony in the town of Villa Almagro in the La Araucanía region, and two days later the Mapuche ceremony (wefun) took place presided over by a machi.

“We did the ceremony in the forest to be more connected with our origins and nature. We were accompanied for two days by the families of both. We are happy,” Burgos said in a statement released by the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation (Movilh), after the pioneering link that occurs after 6 years of relationship and 5 of coexistence.

“We met nine years ago, we were friends and I fell in love with her. After more than two years of friendship, I told her how I felt about her and since I’m a joker, she didn’t believe me,” Burgos said.

“She still felt the same for me and then she ended up believing,” added Viviana Burgos.

The union was applauded by LGTBIQ+ organizations such as Movilh, whose spokesperson, Javiera Zúñiga, stressed that this step “contributes to eradicating discrimination in all spaces, including indigenous peoples, where little or nothing has been said about sexual and gender diversities ”.

“We hope that more Mapuches take these steps, as well as people from any native people in Chile”
he added.

During the first year of equal marriage in Chile, a total of 2,254 same-sex couples were married and 473 people were registered as sons or daughters of gay or lesbian unions. Of the total number of equal marriages, 1,127 were among women and 1,027 among men.

Chile approved equal marriage in December 2021 and became the eighth country in Latin America to achieve this historic law. The first weddings were held in March after the entry into force of the law on March 10, 2022.

Until then, homosexual people could only unite under the legal figure of the Civil Union Agreement (AUC), which does not recognize parentage rights.
