When a saga expands over four installments and more than eleven years, it is normal to see changes in its cast, but deadly soul managed to keep Mel Gibson and Danny Glover at the helm for more than a decade. Not only that, director Richard Donner also remained at the helm of the productions as director and, although the grade went down, the public has supported each and every one of his deliveries.

None of the four films that make up the franchise fall below 60% among the public – critics are another story – and, what’s more, the series that renewed the franchise, broadcast between 2016 and 2019, reaches 76%, placing itself above the last two sequels. It’s been 26 years since its last film release and 5 years since the end of the ‘reboot’, isn’t it time for it to resurface?

The argument of lethal weapon is nothing out of this world: two unlikely cops are forced to team up to solve a complicated case, overcoming personal obstacles in the process and becoming inseparable. How many movies tell something similar? However, fun is latent in every scene of this saga and the dynamic between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover is to blame.

Between shootouts and fist fights, Glover and Gibson develop their characters with emotional depth and a lot of emotion. It’s what has given Muratugh and Riggs such a loyal fan base that they continue to debate to this day which sequel is better. They are the same ones who have been asking for a return to action for a quarter of a century, but, for the moment, it is only one possibility among many.

If you feel like binging and enjoying 8 hours of pure action, you can do so with your subscription to HBO Max, where all four films are available.

The chances of ‘Lethal Weapon 5’ being a reality

Although the leading actors stated for a long time that they had no interest in the return of their duo, since then – and luckily for fans – they have changed their minds. In 2017 the possibility was seriously discussed again and Richard Donner considered directing it. After Donner’s death in 2021, Gibson announced that he would take over directing and that Richard Wenk, responsible for the series, would sign the script.

The completion of the fifth installment seems to be close and, according to ComingSoon, Gibson would like to start filming in 2024. However, since they have not officially talked about the start, it is better to take this information with a grain of salt and wait for more solid evidence. Be that as it may, there are many who want the duo to return to the big screen.
