This week Steve Perry made a symbolic return to Journey. Perry was the lead vocalist of the band in two periods, from 1977 to 1987 and from 1995 to 1998. Now, the artist gave his voice once again to perform «It Could Have Been You«, in a cover by the band guitarist’s son of Toto, Steve Lukather.
The band, named The Effect, also has another son of a musical legend in his ensemble. Thus, to Trev Lukather adds Nick collins, son of Phil collins, in the battery. The Effect was recently going to release its new studio album, which will include the Journey classic with Perry’s voice.
According to Trev Lukather in his Instagram post, “Steve and I have history. Besides my dad, Steve Perry has been a mentor to me. When he heard The Effect, he called me and He expressed how much he liked what we were doing. It meant a lot to me«.

In the publication, Lukather said that “in that same call I started praising a Journey song: ‘It Could Have Been You’. The idea arose for The Effect to do its own version of her. I asked Steve if he would sing it and he joined in«.
«Although we already finished our album, It was too good an idea to pass up. “I would happily take any opportunity to work with my dear Steve,” acknowledged the guitarist and producer of The Effect.
About the new version of “It Could Have Been You”, Trev Lukather was honest, pointing out that “I will always remember his first reaction upon hearing it. Your excitement that we’re reviving an underrated Journey song with new life«.
Thus, he also acknowledged that “to add to the pressure of doing him justice, we not only wanted to surprise my mentor, but also my father-in-law, Jonathan Cain, who is the co-writer of this epic tune”.
«I sent him the track when we finished it. He called me shocked. He praised the arrangement and performances and said that Steve Perry sounded like a million dollars.«, he concluded.
The Effect recently joined Toto as opening band for the next concerts in Germany in June.
