Talk about Ihsahn is to make him one of the most important references of black metal, a genre in which his name and that of his Emperor They need no introduction. The release of his self-titled eighth solo album led to Jason Cenador to speak with the Norwegian for the interview that has been captured in the number 461 of La Heavywhere Ihsahn, who continues to explore extreme music, is surprised that this is not something that other musicians of his generation also do and is surprised that “There are no more people from the original black metal scene who continue to push the limits.”

Ihsahn, who we will have with Emperor in Cartagena in June forming part of the Rock Imperium Fest He tells us about the evolution of his music, the origins of black metal and his particular current perspective: “Don’t forget that by the time Emperor started, black metal was no longer old school. That was at the very beginning of the genre. If you listen to Emperor’s first recordings – I was seventeen when we made the first album – even So we wanted to create something grander, and we added keyboards, choirs, string instruments, trumpets… It’s the same trajectory I’m on today. The starting point of my creativity is the same as when I was seventeen, but at thirty. years of experience.”

The leader of Emperor highlights the boldness of youth that they showed in the black metal scene and does not see it as normal that there are not more people from that generation who continue to challenge the limits: “Now, that looks like old school black metal, but you have to remember that all of us who were part of that black metal scene were teenagers trying to push the limits of what could be done with music. A lot of people He thinks it’s strange that I now make music with saxophone, synthesizers and all that, but I think the strange thing is that there aren’t more people from that original scene who continue to push those limits, because that was the direction we were heading towards. “That for me this is simply the continuation of what I wanted in the first place, of what led me to make this type of extreme music.”

Ihsahn is one of the great protagonists waiting for you in issue 461 of La Heavy. Slash has taken the cover this month with the exclusive interview about his album ‘Orgy of The Damned’.
