The US president, Donald Trumpannounced on Sunday that ordered the Modernization and reopening of Alcatra prisonZ, the federal prison located on a small island in California, closed six decades ago.

The prison, which will be “substantially expanded,” will “the most ruthless and violent criminals in the United States,” Trump wrote on his social truth platform.

Alcatraz, currently converted into a Tourist attractionclosed in 1963 due to high operating costs after being active only 29 years, according to the United States Prison Office.

Located two kilometers from the coast of San Francisco and capacity for only 336 prisoners, the jail housed several famous criminals, including Capone, the of the mafia in the era of the prohibition of sale of alcohol, and was the scene of many incredible escape attempts by the inmates.

Trump has made the repression of crimes, in particular those committed by migrants, a central element of his term in the White Housestarted in January.

“When we were a more serious nation, in past times, we did not hesitate to imprison the most dangerous criminals and keep them away from anyone who could hurt. This is how Trump was supposed to be,” Trump wrote on Sunday.

“We will not tolerate these series criminals that spread dirt, bloodshed and chaos in our streets,” he said.
