According to the latest report From the International Stockholm Institute for Peace Research (SIPRI), military spending reached an unprecedented record in 2024, reaching 2.7 billion dollars. The expense increased, above all, in Europe and the Middle East.
As for the American continent, military spending increased 31 percent in Central America by 2024 compared to the previous year, while, in South America, it remained stable. Together, the investment in defense rose 5.8 percent to reach 1.1 billion dollars, of which 90 percent correspond to the United States, a world leader in military spending.
Mexico amounts to two positions
In Central America, the expense reached 19.8 billion dollars, especially driven by Mexico, which increased its investment by 39 percent. Mexico allocated $ 16.7 billion, due, above all, to a rise in the funds for its National Guard and the Navy, within the operation of the Government in response to organized crime.
This increase raises two positions in the World List to Mexico, in which it now occupies the 22nd position, just behind Brazil, the first Latin American country in defense spending, which spent 20,900 million in 2024, 0.4 percent less.
