President Gustavo Petro uploaded the tone to the confrontation he has with the Congress of the Republic and in his speech on May 1 he launched several criticisms against the Senate, a corporation that must study the request of the popular consultation after the sinking of the labor reform.
The president said that the citizen participation mechanism is “requested by the people” and that, for that reason, the request to be made on May 1 must be approved.
From the Plaza de Bolívar, Petro said that democracy will be used and that the senator who votes against the popular consultation will be exposed first of the country.
“Each proper name voting against the rights of the people must be shown and undressed before their own people. We will see if this popular movement developed, they will continue in the Congress of the Republic. They will not continue,” he said.
In addition, he indicated that if the popular consultation is not approved, citizens will revoke the Congress of the Republic.
“If they believe that at midnight they will vote to say ‘no’ to the consultation, the people of Colombia get up and revoke them. The people get up and revoke them, and do not believe that it is as they think, they believe that we are going to enter and we will get to force them, it is not so. We are respectful of human dignity, but we are not assholes,” he reiterated.

In his speech, he said that there are legislators who arrived with “Mafia money, multinational monies or because they believe anointed.”
He assured that he does not seek to re -elect, but that the popular consultation is a citizen mandate that must move forward to guarantee labor rights.
“The senator and the representative to the Chamber have to speak in front of the people, so I want them here speaking between this demonstration. If in a Senate session at midnight they will vote to say ‘no’ to the consultation, the people of Colombia get up and revoke them ”said.
With the presentation of the Popular Consultation to the Senate, the Corporation will have a maximum of 30 days to pronounce and define whether or not to support the national government’s request. Petro has said that if there is no positive pronouncement of the legislative, he will convene the participation mechanism by decree.
However, the legal debate will open if the Senate says ‘no’ to the popular consultation, because in that scenario the government must seek another way to summon citizens to the polls.
