The National Service of Natural Areas Protected by the State (Sernanp) and the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) began the formation of the first Helitransported brigade of the country, aimed at improving the response capacity against forest fires in protected areas.
Specialized course in the Callao Air Base
From May 5 to 9, 25 participants, 21 of them Forest fire Combatters of Sernanp, participate in the “Air Crew Course” in the Air Group No. 3 of the FAP. The program combines theory and practice, including real flight hours, and addresses issues such as flight physiology, fire fighting, air operations, use of communications and human factors (CRM).

The objective is to prepare staff to act efficiently and safely in emergencies, strengthening coordination between land brigades and air units.
Participation of international authorities and support
The Canadian ambassador for Peru and Bolivia, Louis Marcotte; the General Commander of the Air Wing No. 2, Major General FAP Julio César Gutiérrez Gonzales; and the Director of Strategic Development of Sernanp, Marcos Luis Pastor Rozas. The completion of the course has the support of the Canada Embassy.
Institutional Fire Strategy
Sernanp implements a forest fire risk management strategy since 2018, and its institutional strategic plan contemplates disaster risk as a priority. The formation of this helitransported brigade is part of these policies.
With this initiative, a faster and more efficient response is sought before the fires that threaten the ecosystems of the country’s protected natural areas.
