The cycle path was approved on Wednesday, May 7, unanimously in the Municipal Council of Caroní during session No. 10/2025 – Extraordinary No. 11. This will promote urban cycling and begin with the construction work of a cyclestone network for the Caroní municipality.
Once the mayor’s order is issued, cyclevías will be designed based on their international standards. There are streets in the city that will be shared by vehicles and cyclists.
«It is not easy because we have a culture in which vehicle drivers see cyclists as non -existent in municipal roads. That is why we have had a lot of accidents, many of them fatal, ”said Oscar Tillero, president of the association.
Double lane bikes will be built, each of 2.50 meters wide, located on the right side of the road to be shared by cyclists and conductors. These will be demarcated with white paint and will have cat’s eyes to improve their distance visibility and alert vehicles when passing over them, indicating the entrance to the cycling zone.
In addition, they will carry pictograms of the image of a bicycle every six meters in the pavement. On the right side, there will be parals to distance the cycle path of the wax and the passersby that circulate it.
A fight that dates back to 2009
The Association of Ciclovías Bolívar initiated the process of this ordinance in 2009, after a traffic accident that involved several of its members and motivated the creation of the Foundation.
Under the presidency of Oscar Tillero, the Mayor’s Office of Caroní realized the potential of cycle paths, because these not only promote physical activity, but also tourism. The project was done from the association and was presented in 2021.
«There will be baskets for people to mount their bicycles when using the public bus. We will talk to those in charge of the bus routes to locate these spaces in the best way for people to estimate their bicycle, go to the bus site and can later look for their bike, ”Tillero added.
The idea is that there are public parking for bicycle and that this becomes customary in Ciudad Guayana, which will promote the use of the bicycle to transport from one place to another.
«It is to create a culture that does not exist in the city. A culture that promotes energy savings, little gas expense and little pollution, ”said Oscar.
Cyclists reactions
The association had this since Tillero came to the presidency. Therefore, the city cyclists who were aware of the ordinance, waited for this moment with a lot of emotion.
«My first reaction was of deep satisfaction, ‘so much gives the gotica on the rock until it makes the hole’. I am grateful to God because the constancy had its prize and excited because we are going to have a safe space where to travel and travel the main avenues of the city, ”exclaimed Carolina Rodríguez, a city cyclist.
Cyclists hope that the cycle path will be respected and that they can tie their bicycle with their lock to protect themselves in the bus stops. One of the things they ask for most is the awareness of the premises so that parking spaces begin to build.
