Bruce Bochy absent from Rangers’ Monday game

Rangers did not give further details about the absence of manager Bruce Bochy, who is expected to return for the second of the series against the Tigers on Tuesday.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers will play without their manager, Bruce Bochythis Monday night.

The team announced a few hours before the game against the Detroit Tigers that Bochy was absent due to an “scheduled personal matter.” The team did not elaborate on his absence, but said the driver was expected to return for Tuesday’s game.

Will Venable, associate team manager, will coach the Rangers in the first game of the series against the Tigers. Bochy told Venable on Sunday that he would be out and told him the lineup for the game he will miss.

The result will count towards Bochy’s managerial record, which was 2,122-2,131 before the match. He ranks 10th on his career wins list, with the most wins among active managers.

This is the first game Bochy has missed since taking over as Rangers manager before last season, when they won their first World Series title. It was the fourth for Bochy, who previously won three championships with San Francisco, which visits Texas next weekend.
