LOUIS — Paul Goldschmidt and Brendan Donovan homered and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 on Thursday to win for the first time since May 29.
Donovan’s home run led off the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and extended his hitting streak to eight straight games.
Lance Lynn went 4 1/3 innings, breaking a string of four quality outings by Cardinals pitchers. Lynn allowed three runs and four hits, with three walks and five strikeouts.
Chris Roycroft (1-0) earned his first decision in the majors. Five Cardinals relievers covered 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Andrew Kittredge scored his first save.
Mitch Keller (8-4) took the loss after allowing four runs and eight hits in six innings. The Pirates have lost three of four.
For the Pirates, Dominican Oneil Cruz 1-for-4, two RBIs. Cuban Yasmani Grandal 4-1, one scored. Venezuelan Edward Olivares 4-1.
For the Cardinals, Venezuelan Pedro Pagés went 1 for 3, one RBI. Dominican José Fermín 3-2, one scored.
