German police arrested an armed man hours before the Netherlands – Poland match

The German Police had to shoot a man who was wearing an axe and he was threatening the fans of the Netherlands who were in the Reeperbahn Fan Zone, in Hamburg, a few hours before the match between Poland and the orange team begins, which will take place at 3 p.m.

The events took place in the St Pauli neighborhood, where police officers were forced to open fire on the attacker in order to neutralize him. After firing a first warning shot to make the man drop the pickaxe and the fire device he was carrying, they used a pepper spray and then they shot the man. The agents have also found in his backpack a Molotov cocktail.

“There is currently a major police operation in St Pauli. According to the first conclusions, a person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device. The emergency services then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and currently receiving medical treatment”. With these words the Hamburg police reported what happened through their social networks.

Security sources had previously informed the newspaper Bild that the individual appeared shortly after noon in the Reeperbhan Street, a busy street where fans of both teams (Netherlands and Poland) were gathered prior to the match. It should be noted that this has not been the only incident that has occurred in the Euro Cup so far. On the day of the opening, the police were forced to evacuate the Berlin Fan Zone for a few hours after finding a suspicious package. After several hours, they finally reported that there was no danger and reopened the area.

For months, the organization and the participating countries have developed a police device in order to avoid altercations. Among the bodies that are part of the security plan is the National Police, who since this Friday has been collaborating with the German authorities.

Specifically, they have moved 31 agents, 25 of them from the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) and six from the National Sports Office (OND). The UIP agents will be deployed together with the German Federal Police to control the borders and protect the main transport infrastructures, where they will cooperate in maintaining citizen security and the attention of the Spanish fans who will support the team led by Luis de la Fuente, moving to the venues where Spain will compete in the different phases.

In addition, in some stadiums they will collaborate with the security device of the regional police, as well as in the meeting areas intended for the location of fans attending the matches. The 25 displaced riot police arrived at the Federal Police Academy in Bamberg (Germany) in early June, along with other European police forces, to receive the necessary training to carry out the joint operational deployment.
