CHICAGO — Cuban Yordan Álvarez hit a home run in the first inning and drove in a run in a four-run seventh inning and the Houston Astros beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Thursday.
Álvarez made it 1-0 with a 439-foot shot to right off Chris Flexen and with which he reached 15 home runs. His single in the seventh tied the game at 3. The two-time All-Star finished with three hits after missing the previous two games for family reasons.
Alex Bregman added three hits and scored a run for the Astros, who won their second straight after losing the first of the three-game series to the team with the worst record in the Major Leagues.
Flexen went six innings and allowed one run on five hits. The White Sox fell to a record of 20-56 and have 26 losses in 32 games.
For the Astros, Venezuelan José Altuve was 1-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Cuban Álvarez is 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBIs. The Dominicans Yainer Díaz 1-for-5 with one run scored, Jeremy Peña 0-for-4 with an RBI. Honduran Mauricio Dubón 1-for-4 with one scored.
For the White Sox, Cuban Luis Robert Jr. was 1 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI. Venezuelan Lenyn Sosa 4-0. Puerto Rican Martín Maldonado 3-1 with one scored.
