Newell’s reserve fell 3 to 0 against Vélez at the José Amalfitani in one of the semifinals of the Proyección Cup and was eliminated. The rojinegros, who played all the playoffs as visitors, beat Belgrano and Estudiantes, but couldn’t beat Fortín.

The first half was a back-and-forth game, with a lot of intensity where each team took care of the ball like gold and had long possessions. Nobody wanted to give anything away. Even Jerónimo Russo and Mateo Silvetti made much more effort than in other games to pay attention to the climbs of Vélez’s sides.
In the first quarter of an hour the local team had one at 5′ when Reinatti blocked Maher Carrizo’s goal and Leprosy had theirs with a long shot from Moya that went over the crossbar.
Until at 15′ the relentless Maher Carrizo crowned a good team play with a left foot to make it 1-0 for Vélez.
As happened against Estudiantes, Newell’s were not discouraged by the goal against. He placed his central markers in the central circle and had three chances to equalize: at 20′ with a free kick by Joaquín Cesar, at 21′ by Mihovilcevich, after a stop by the local defense; and the clearest was at 40′ with a header from Jerónimo Russo, after a cross from Silvetti. While Vélez almost took advantage on a counterattack through Benjamín Bosch.
Newell’s couldn’t turn it around
In the second half, at 47′, Montoro, after an assist from Carrizo, was about to take the home team’s lead by two. Newell’s showed a lot of impetus, but in the rush he made many mistakes and had a hard time generating dangerous actions. He lost the ball quickly in the middle, which Vélez took advantage of to generate some counterattack.
Lunari tried with the income that gave him very good dividends against Estudiantes like those of Agustín Juárez and Santino Duarte, and then for the last 15 minutes he sent Lisandro Pola to the field to try to twist history.
But after a stopped ball in attack, at 78′, Vélez hit a sharp counterattack and Bosch beat Reinatti to make it 2-0 for Fortín.
That goal was lethal for the red-and-black kids and at 81′ Maher Carrizo, the figure of the match, went one-on-one with Reinatti to make it 3-0 for Vélez and close out the semi-final.
