ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Mickey Moniak hit a grand slam for the first time in his career, Taylor Ward homered again and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 7-5 on Tuesday.
Jo Adell had an RBI double, while Logan O’Hoppe added an RBI single for the Angels, who have won three of four after taking two in a row in Oakland.
Moniak emptied the bases with his fourth home run of the season to cap a five-run attack in the third inning. The player, once the top pick in the draft, has struggled since he received some time on the field during his first full season with Los Angeles.
However, he has improved noticeably in recent weeks with better discipline in the batter’s box.
Brent Rooker hit his 14th homer and JJ Bleday had an RBI single for last-place Oakland, which has lost four straight and 17 of 22. The A’s lost their 10th straight on the road and fell 24 games from .500, their worst record this season.
Armando Álvarez had his first hit in the majors and drove in his first run for Oakland.
The victory went to Tyler Anderson (7-7), who allowed three runs and five hits in five innings, during which he walked five.
Mitch Spence (4-4) allowed six runs and eight hits. He had five starts without a win.
