NVIDIA now sells RTX 4070 with the RTX 4080 chip capped

The graphics card market allows leading companies from time to time to make certain changes that, initially, could benefit both buyers and the company that develops them. In this case, NVIDIA has sold a series of graphics cards RTX 4070 which instead of including the AD104 chip, the basic one of these GPUs, includes a more powerful one, the AD103 used in the RTX 4080but with reduced power to adapt it to the mid-range version.

Being one of the leading companies in the information technology sector, NVIDIA has carried out a large number of projects that have allowed them to remain commercially at the top of the largest companies worldwide. But that does not indicate that sometimes they have to adapt some of their technologies for other uses, as is the case of some RTX 4070 which incorporate a much more powerful chip than they should, although obviously, this power is limited on purpose.

Some RTX 4070 include the RTX 4080 chip

Within the GPU market, NVIDIA is a company that offers a large number of ranges, which allow users to choose the power according to their budget. In most cases, each graphics card usually has a specific chip designed that, depending on its cost, reduces or increases the power. power. In the case of the RTX 4070incorporate the AD104 chip, a version of the chips created by NVIDIA whose memory-related specifications are 12 GB, GDDR6X, 192 bit.

On the other hand, the RTX 4080 They include a higher version of this chip, which allows a greater amount of memory along with an increase in the clock speed itself and in the Shaders, TMUs and ROPs. That is why it is strange to see how it is used in other lower-end graphics cards that offer much lower power compared to the 4080, since in others that can offer similar performance (and price), it is not strange to find this chip, for example, the 4070 Ti Super also incorporates this chip due to the technical limitations of the previous one.

On the other hand, what is strange is that they use it in a much simpler way, in lower range graphics such as RTX 4070 more basic, taking into account that to incorporate it, they must reduce practically all the technical aspects that make the chip RTX 4080 on a titan. This implies that they have adapted the AD103 chip so that it can be used with the 12 GB format of the 4070, reducing the memory bus to 192 bits from the 256 it supports, along with other aspects such as limiting the Shaders and the L2 cache, thus reducing the power of the graph.

Why would they include a superior chip in an inferior GPU?

The investigation has been carried out by Techpowerup, from where they indicate that a user of their page told them that the program they created to know the specifications of graphics cards, GPU-Z, was not capable of identifying their video card. This led them to begin to investigate the reason that could cause this, discovering after several tests that it was a RTX 4070 that incorporated a chip from the RTX 4080 with limitations in terms of performance and power.

There is no conclusion as to the real reason why NVIDIA I would be trying to incorporate this chip into graphics cards, since they should have a large enough stock of AD104 chips to be able to create new graphics cards RTX 4070.
