Retro devices like consoles from past decades or CD players are a delight for those who are a little nostalgic. These allow them to relive past experiences in a constantly evolving technological world. Someone has combined the new with the old to bring Linamp to life.

We are talking about a physical media player that is inspired by Winamp. The device has a 7.9-inch touch screen that displays the interface of the legendary Windows program that appeared in 1997, although it also has many other interesting features.

Linamp, the physical multimedia player inspired by Winamp

Linamp is powered by a Raspberry Pi 4B with a 32GB SD card. The microcomputer board has made it possible to offer a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB-C port, a USB-A port and an Ethernet port. The device’s case is made of aluminum and seeks to imitate the style of audio devices from the nineties.

The front part has been 3D printed. As we can see in the images, instead of saying Winamp it says Linamp, but it adopts the external appearance of the classic skin of the program. To play any audio file you need to connect an SD card or use an external disc player.

When you insert a CD, Linamp automatically detects the disc, extracts the track information and is ready for playback. It is only necessary press the Play button on the touch screen to start listening to music. In the future, according to its creator, the device should offer support for Bluetooth and Spotify.

Linamp is a project by Rodrigo Méndez. He says in his Hackaday profile that he lives in Mexico and that he is “an embedded systems developer, interested in web technologies and the Internet of Things.” In a video posted on YouTube we have additional details about his most recent creation.
