In the small part of this entertainment medium reserved for role-playing video games, very few make the decision to do without the romances. These affairs, whether temporary or of weight to the plot and its ramifications, add an additional layer of emotional depth, but it is something that, on the one hand, may be foreign depending on the subject and, on the other hand, there are studies that do not know how to deal with them. In this case, TROUBLESHOOTER: Abandoned Children is one of the latter, and the RPG with strategy mechanics premiered in 2020 without an appointment system because the team did not have real life experience to deal with it in the video game.
Released four years ago, TROUBLESHOOTER places us in Valhalla, where ordinary citizens have the power to arrest criminals like troubleshooter, which in a literal translation we can understand as “problem solvers”, something like heroes. Despite receiving very positive reviews on Steam, with 94% positive reviews, this “First season” of an independent saga that sought a niche in the market has been left fallow waiting for news about its possible continuations.
An RPG without romances not out of necessity, but out of inexperience
However, the game continues to attract role-playing lovers and even though it is not in Spanish, there are Spanish-speaking players who have requested a translation into Spanish so that it reaches more users. Even so, and far from this, there is a request or rather an absence that to this day raises doubts: Why isn’t there a romantic plot with options like other RPGs? A question that accompanied the review of the user Flares last May 2024, to which the game director answered frankly.
Dandylion himself explained that the omission of any type of romantic options was due to a lack of personal and team experience with romantic relationships. “It is a mechanic that many people wantedwe also, but my team… had no experience with thatnot even in real life,” Dandylion admitted in a frank response to the criticism.
The sincerity from the developer did not go unnoticed, generating funny reactions among the gaming community. While some expressed disappointment at the omission, many praised the decision to maintain the game’s authenticity and even sent messages of encouragement to the development team.
On the other hand, there are also more critical voices that suggest that it is not necessary to have real experience in terms like this to apply it to a fictional environment. While some shooters choose to approach experts in the field, including ex-military personnel, others launch themselves with the sole idea of ”having a good time shooting.” Could you have a romantic system? Yes, but it is also true that to the untrained eye, perhaps the result would have been something strange and misplaced.
