ChatGPT app with GPT-4o for Mac is now available for free to everyone

In mid-May, OpenAI presented to the world a new artificial intelligence model called GPT-4o. The announcement came accompanied by the limited release of the desktop application by ChatGPT. If you wanted to use it, you simply had to be a paying user of the Plus or Team plans, and wait for it to be available.

There was also the possibility of using the application in advance, but using a trick. Now, the aforementioned limitations have disappeared. The company led by Sam Altman has just made the ChatGPT application for macOS available to all users, even those who do not pay to use the service.

ChatGPT on macOS, free for everyone

Although we have been able to use ChatGPT on our computers since its launch in November 2022, the arrival of the service’s official application changes things a lot. In short, it opens the door to making much better use of the advantages of GPT-4obut not in the purest “Her”-style voice-over mode, which has been delayed until this fall.

ChatGPT for Mac allows us to log in to access our conversation history. In addition, it allows us to access dictation, conversation mode and, most importantly, share our screen or upload files. We can also quickly access the chatbot with the command Option + Space.

The first step to access all this is to download the application. To do this we will have to go to openai.com/chatgpt/mac and click on Discharge. The next step is install the .dmg just like you would do with any other application, that is, by double clicking on the file and dragging it to the folder. Applications (Applications).

Once the aforementioned step is completed, you must log in with your OpenAI account to start chatting with the chatbot. If you want to use the benefits related to voice or vision, you will need to give the application the necessary permissions. At this point it is important to be aware of what we share with OpenAI.

We can, for example, share Mail window to chat over an email. We can do the same with an Excel table or any other program that we run on our Mac. Just as we would do with the web service or mobile application, we must try not to share private information with the chatbot.

It should be noted that the new features of the service have usage limits. After chatting a certain number of times with ChatGPT with GPT-4o, the chatbot will start working with GPT-3.5, and will invite us to join the paid version to continue using it in its best version. In addition, it will prevent us from using the vision options for several hours.

Unfortunately, Macs with Intel processors will not be able to access this experience. The ChatGPT application for computers requires an M1 or higher chip to function. It is also not available on Windows computers. OpenAI has promised that it will release a version for Microsoft’s operating system “later this year.”
