Man who was hospitalized with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever dies after being bitten by a tick

The elderly man who was hospitalized in Salamanca for a case of Crimean-Gongo hemorrhagic fever (FHCC), caused by a tick bite a week ago, died yesterday, May 1, in the hospital, as confirmed to Animal’s Health from the Ministry of Health.

Initially the patient was in a stable situationwithin the severity, in the Salamanca Hospital and with the pertinent isolation and protection measures for this type of situations.

It should be remembered that after the death, the Ministry activated the waste management and cleaning protocol.

The case was confirmed by the Ministry of Health after analyzes carried out by the National Center for Microbiology of the Carlos III Health Institutelocated in Majadahonda (Madrid).

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is caused by a virus, the main transmission mechanism of which is the bite of the tick of the genus Hyalommaalthough it can also be transmitted from person to person through contact with the patient’s blood or fluids, which can occur especially in healthcare personnel when they are not properly protected.

Refering to prevention of bites by these insectshealth authorities remember the importance of wearing appropriate clothing and footwear during field trips, as well as traveling on roads and using repellents for both people and pet animals. Likewise, it must be insisted that any ticks that may have attached must be removed as soon as possible and appropriately, preferably by health professionals.
