Russia temporarily bans sugar exports to stabilize domestic market

Moscow, (EFE).- The Russian Government today banned the export of cane and beet sugar and pure sucrose until the end of August in order to guarantee the stability of the domestic food market.

“The limitation will be in force until August 31, 2024. The decision is aimed at supporting the stability of the domestic food market,” the Russian Cabinet of Ministers said on its Telegram channel.

The ban will not be total since it provides for a series of exceptions for countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).

In particular, the export of 28,000 tons will be allowed to Armenia, 5,000 to Belarus, 120,000 to Kazakhstan and 28,500 to Kyrgyzstan.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture will be responsible for distributing these quotas among the EEU countries.

Russia periodically limits the export of certain items: in November last year it banned the export of durum wheat for six months, and last February it vetoed the export of gasoline until the end of August due to the increase in demand during the spring and summer season. EFE
