A community in Makhanda is in shock following the tragic deaths of six people, including a teenager when a mini-bus taxi crashed into a house on Saturday night.

The Makana Municipality said the horror accident occurred on O Street in Tantyi after vehicle’s “brakes failed.”

Spokesperson, Anele Mjekula, said the driver, four passengers including a municipal employee, and a teenage boy who was hit while walking on the pavement, died on the scene.

He said councillors, led by the Speaker, Mabhuti Matyumza, rushed to the crash site and consoled shocked community members.

Mjekula also appealed to the public to refrain from sharing a graphic video taken at the crash scene.

Meanwhile, the executive mayor of the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Deon De Vos, called on motorists to adhere to the rules of the road following the tragedy.

He also sent well wishes to three survivors who are recovering in hospitals in Makhanda and Gqeberha.
