Chennai: A 24-year-old nurse who performed a surgical procedure on herself in the bathroom and delivered a child, who died, was arrested on Saturday. She had severed the baby’s leg during the delivery.West Mambalam police initially booked the nurse, W Vinisha, under sections 315 (attempt to prevent a child from being born alive or to cause it to die after birth) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of an offense or giving false information) of the IPC. After post-mortem results, the charges were updated to section 302 (murder), leading to her arrest. She was subsequently produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. Vinisha, from Kanyakumari, was employed at a private hospital in T Nagar and was living in staff quarters on South Boag Road. Police said she was in a relationship with a software professional until a few months ago and she had conceived. She concealed her pregnancy from her colleagues and attempted the unsuccessful abortion attempt. During the early hours of April 30, she locked herself in the laundry room and attempted an episiotomy surgical procedure on herself. Police said she accidentally cut off the baby’s legs during the procedure. She flushed it down the toilet and placed the newborn in a bucket. Hearing her cries, Ella’s roommate barged into the bathroom and found Vinisha in a pool of blood and the child in the bucket.She alerted others and transported the mother and child to the hospital. However, the child was declared dead on arrival. She initially told police that the child was still born. . “A day before self-delivering the child, she complained of dizziness and back pain. Her colleagues gave her medicines but did not realize she was pregnant,” an officer said.
