Second suspect arrested for murder of Opelousas man, just released from prison, found dead in his home day after Christmas | crime

OPELOUSAS, La. (KADN) — Opelousas police said a second suspect has been arrested for murder after a man, whose family members said had recently been released from jail, was found dead in his home the day after Christmas.

Authorities said Martin Benjamin, 18, of Opelousas, was arrested on Tuesday, May 7, on charges of second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities.

According to investigators with the Opelousas Police Department, John Davis, 39, was found shot and killed in his home at 918 Railroad Avenue on December 26, 2023. Relatives said he had just gotten out of jail the week before he was murdered.

Police said Abraham Goodley, 18, was taken into custody on Wednesday, Jan. 3. A grand jury handed up a second-degree murder indictment in February. He is still awaiting trial.

Opelousas police noted all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
