The National Energy Control Center (CENACE) declared Emergency Operational Status in the national interconnected system, although it can be seen that it is an issue of energy supply and demand in the country, many people are unaware of how it could affect them.

The emergency operating state of the CENACE It means that there are no adequate reserve margins and the system operates outside the safety limits, but remains stable.

This condition may be caused by rationing of natural gas imported from the United States, but contrary to popular belief, it does not necessarily mean that the state of emergency will cause large-scale power outages; However, several blackouts were reported in various states of the Mexican Republic such as Veracruz, State of Mexico, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosí.

The CENACE state of emergency usually occurs when the consumption of natural gas increases to keep the heating on – in winter seasons – or the air conditioning in heat waves and high temperatures.

Another factor that can cause this condition may be extreme weather phenomena such as hurricanes, storms, heat waves or extreme cold.

The fact that many companies, factories and private homes keep the air conditioning on can cause emergency conditions, but it is important to take into account that some states in the country face temperatures that reach up to 50 degrees, so people need to cool off.

The CENACE emergency declaration today, May 7, lasted just under an hour. According to bulletin SIN24-0073, this condition in the National Electrical System remained from 5:04 p.m. to 5:52 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7. The main negative consequences of the emergency are blackouts in certain municipalities or states.

“START As of 5:04 p.m. on May 7, 2024, an Emergency Operational State is declared in the National Interconnected System, so CENACE will carry out the necessary operational actions,” an initial statement read.

Later it was reported that the relevant actions of CENACE were able to avoid large-scale electrical failures: “END. At 5:52 p.m. on May 7, 2024, the National Interconnected System goes to Normal Operating State,” it was reported.

This is not the first time this year that an emergency declaration has been reported this year—such as on January 12—intermittently, it has also occurred with alert declarations, an example of this was on January 27.

The Ministry of Energy (Sener) has announced a significant milestone in the refining capacity of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), reaching 72% from 35% at the beginning of the administration of President Enrique Peña Nieto (PRI).

This achievement is attributed to the policies and projects promoted by the current administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), including significant developments both in the national territory and abroad.

The improvement in refining capacity is largely due to the construction of the new Olmeca Refinery in Dos Bocas, Tabasco, as well as the completion of the purchase of the refinery in Deer Park, Texas, United States.

In addition, an intensive rehabilitation of existing refineries in Mexico has been carried out, marking a renewed focus on strengthening the National Refining System (SNR). Since 2019, an investment of 62,898 million pesos has been allocated to these efforts, allowing refined production to increase significantly.
