Rodeo-Themed Spectacle Marks the 102nd Annual Flunk Day Celebration

The annual email announcing “Today is Flunk Day” arrived at 7:00 am on May 6, 2024, marking the start of the 102nd celebration at Knox College.

This year’s rodeo-themed event saw the campus bustling with students clad in bright pink shirts, boldly proclaiming “Not Our First Rodeo.” Many students took the opportunity to dress up in appropriate fashion, adorning cowboy hats, boots, and even the occasional lasso rope. “I’m loving all the cowboy hats, it’s a fun theme this year,” Luke Aschenberg ’25 said.

Across campus, rides and booths were set up, sticking tight to the Rodeo theme. Students panned for gold, bounced on inflatable horses in a race to the finish line, and even tried their hand at lassoing a mechanical sheep. A miniature train on wheels whistled across campus, taking students on a delightful trip. For those seeking relaxation, a zen room in Ferris Lounge offered a make-your-own-lip-balm station and an oxygen bar.

“I don’t want to miss out on anything today. I’m not going home until the entire day is over. I’m going to really soak it in,” Ashel Dsouza ’27 said after a horse race with friends.

A highlight of the day for many was the petting zoo set up outside of Old Jail, with dozens of goats, chickens, and even a donkey available for students to cuddle and bond with.

“The vibes have been good today. I was definitely looking forward to the petting zoo, one of the best things we’ve had so far,” Joshua Carlos ’26 said.

Local band Company Dimes performed during a lunch break on the Gizmo Patio, bringing high-octane tunes to recharge those in attendance. Students enjoyed free meals throughout the day, with local offerings from Cornucopia and Orange Cup. Water and snacks provided by the College were available all day to keep students fueled.

The arrival of the Abraham Lincoln impersonator brought smiles to many faces, as he mingled with students all over campus, taking numerous selfies along the way. The Knox College TikTok account was even able to find out the question on everyone’s mind: is Abe a Swiftie?

Later in the afternoon, the annual softball game between students and faculty was held on Post Lawn, with Lincoln taking his turn at the plate, as well as on the field. A cornhole tournament was held outside of the Gizmo, providing stiff competition and bragging rights.

“I circled the train like three times and got my butt kicked in the cornhole tournament. It’s been really fun. It’s my final Flunk, I’m a little sad and wish I could have another,” Julia Garder ’24 said.

After dinner, Taylor Lounge was packed from front to back as students took a much-needed breather to enjoy a game of bingo, with prizes for those lucky enough to fill their card first. Upstairs in the Oak Room, karaoke was set up for those looking for an opportunity to showcase their talent.

The day closed with a night concert on the Gizmo Patio, featuring dance beats and glow sticks, capping off another successful addition to one of Knox’s most cherished traditions.
