Chennai: Two couples, one of them carrying two infants, were arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths at city airport for smuggling gold worth ₹2.4 crore in their rectums. The passengers were traveling from Malaysia. “We normally don’t suspect passengers with children. But smugglers seem to be exploiting this to smuggle gold,” said DRI officials. Based on information, DRI sleuths reached Chennai airport on Tuesday morning and subjected random passengers to searches. They saw two couples, one of them carrying two infants, who looked visibly uncomfortable. During inquiry, they were initially evasive but after persistent grilling, they confessed that they were hiding gold in their rectums. The enforcement authorities seized rubbery balls containing gold from them. The balls weighing 3.8kg gold, are worth 2.4 crore. “Inquiries revealed the couples were working as house help in different places. A person promised them both free tickets and money to smuggle the gold. They must have trained the couples to hold the rubbery balls in their rectums,” he told a DRI official. The couples were natives of Hyderabad and Indore and had connecting flights from Chennai. DRI is investigating whether the gold was destined for Chennai or their respective towns and is also gathering information about the smuggler who engaged them. DRI said that they would be remanded in judicial custody. The children will be handed over to relatives soon, officials said. This is the second biggest seizure of gold at the airport this month after customs officials seized 1.07 cr gold seized from a woman at airport earlier this month. That woman, who arrived from Sharjah, too had hidden gold weighing about 1.69kg concealed in four rubbery balls in her undergarments.
