Growth of e-commerce and increase in fraud

E-commerce in Mexico has experienced impressive growth, tripling its value since 2019. This increase attracts not only consumers, but also cybercriminals. During events such as Hot Sale, the increase in sales volume makes it easier for fraud to go undetected, resulting in significant financial losses for retailers.

Recommendations to prevent cyber attacks

Israel Gutiérrez, CTO of A3Sec, highlights four key points for companies and users to strengthen their cybersecurity during the Hot Sale:

  • Updating software and security patches: Keeping all systems up to date is crucial to preventing cybercriminals from exploiting vulnerabilities.
  • Strategy against phishing: Knowing how to recognize suspicious emails is essential, since phishing attacks in Mexico increased by 617% in 2023. If you receive WhatsApp or SMS messages from parcel companies, be wary of them.
  • Real-time monitoring: Monitor network activity continuously, as a user avoid making purchases on public WiFi networks.
  • Pentesting: Performing penetration testing before the event can identify and fix security flaws before they are exploited in businesses.

According to Signifyd, fraud pressure during the June 2023 Hot Sale was 68% higher compared to a month without promotions, and 106% higher than during the same event in 2022. These increases reflect greater sophistication and frequency of fraud attempts during sales peaks.
