What will be closed on Memorial Day 2024?

Every last Monday in May, the United States commemorates Memorial Day, a holiday that marks the unofficial start of summer for many Americans.

This year, Memorial Day is May 27, a day dedicated to remembering and honoring those who sacrificed their lives in the United States military service.

What will be closed?

As a federal holiday, various public and private institutions remain closed on Memorial Day.

Federal, state and municipal governments, the stock market, state and federal courts, as well as the US Postal Service, the Federal Reserve, and most banks will be closed.

Some retail stores will be closed during the holiday. For example, Costco will be closed on Memorial Day, one of the seven holidays on which it does not operate.

UPS will suspend its pickup and delivery services on Memorial Day, although UPS Express Critical service will continue to be available, with the possibility of some UPS stores remaining open depending on location.

On the other hand, FedEx will not provide delivery services and its offices may have adjusted hours during the holiday.

In addition, some institutions that usually open on Saturdays will close to allow their employees to enjoy an extended three-day holiday, such as the public libraries in New York and Houston, which will be closed from May 25 to 27.

What will be open?

On the other hand, most supermarket chains such as Walmart, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s will operate during normal hours.

Large retailers like Target, Home Depot, and Lowe’s will also be open. Additionally, 7-Eleven, other convenience stores and gas stations, as well as some local bars and restaurants, are typically open during limited hours.

Across the country, cities from Washington DC and New York to Chicago, Houston and Sacramento will have parades, and some small businesses may be open along parade routes.

Will cemeteries and national parks be open?

Memorial Day is also observed with solemnity, as it is a day of reflection for many. The National Cemetery Association will open its 155 national cemeteries, where more than 4.1 million people rest, including veterans of all wars and conflicts.

Flags are placed on graves and special ceremonies are held to honor the fallen.

Some National Park locations will also be open, with ceremonies, speakers and music to commemorate this significant day.

Arlington National Cemetery, overseen by the US Department of the Army, is a prominent place of honor for illustrious figures in American history, including presidents and war heroes.

Memorial Day Trips

Many citizens of the United States take advantage of the long holiday weekend to travel.

Flights are booked and airports are packed. Many are expected to choose to travel by car, and the American Automobile Association, a national federation of automobile clubs with more than 60 million members, estimates that millions of people will travel.

In the weeks leading up to the holiday period, gasoline prices remain stable, with an average sale of $3.64 per gallon, according to AAA reports.
