This is how the new electoral map looked.

Just in 2023, Mexico registered two important alterations in the political landscape. In it Mexico stateFor the first time in its history, a woman won the governorship. Another fact that she highlighted is that the victory went to Morena and not to the PRI; party that controlled the entity for 94 years.

For its part, the tricolor party managed to retain the governorship of Coahuilaan entity that has been maintained since 1929.

In some of the entities where Morena and allied parties won the government elections it was by a wide margin, according to the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP), which suggests a voting margin of between 10 or even 20% of the votes in their favor or even more.

The next elections in Mexico will take place in 2027.

In addition to local positions, in that year the country will renew 16 governorships. These are Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chihuahua, Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tlaxcala and Zacatecas.

In Mexico, governorships are not renewed at the same time because each state has its own own electoral calendar, defined by your local constitution. This system allows for a staggered distribution of elections, which has several advantages.

Firstly, it helps avoid saturation of the electorate, since too many elections are not concentrated on a single date. In addition, it allows electoral authorities to manage the process more efficiently, supervising and ensuring the transparency of each election separately.

On the other hand, time lag also provides political stability by avoiding simultaneous changes in several state administrations.

Each six-year term of a governor begins and ends in different yearswhich contributes to a balance in the exercise of power at the local and national level.
