Nopala, Hidalgo.-During the passage of the historic Empress 2816 locomotive through Hidalgo, a tragic accident occurred that claimed the life of a young woman of approximately 25 years old.

The events occurred in the community of Aragón, in the municipality of Nopala de Villagrán, where the locomotive hit the head of the woman at high speed, who was trying to take a photograph.

In a video broadcast on social networks, you can see a crowd that was on the side of the tracks, waiting to see the passage of the historic locomotive manufactured in 1930.

How was the accident?

In said video that circulates on social networks, the moment before the accident was captured, where the crowd begins to take out their phones to capture the historic moment.

It is there that the victim, who was wearing an orange shirt, is observed to be the person closest to the train tracks and ready to take a selfie with the locomotive behind him.

At that moment, she was hit by one of the front parts of the “La Emperatriz” locomotive, which hit her head, leaving her unconscious.

After the impact, his body was left lying on the side of the road. A man quickly approached to try to give him help, while everyone present began desperately shouting for an ambulance.

Upon the arrival of the district’s emergency services, it was confirmed that the young woman no longer had vital signs. For this reason, her body was covered and the area cordoned off, all of this before the astonished gaze of hundreds of people who were at the site.

Why is the Empress 2816 locomotive historic?

The iconic locomotive 2816, also known as “The Empress”, is a relic of railway engineering manufactured in 1930 and is currently making its last journey from Canada.

This tour is part of the celebrations for the merger between Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS), where it made stops throughout the United States and now in Mexico, giving people the opportunity to admire a piece of history of this means of transport.

What did the company say after the accident?

The Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) company regretted the incident and announced that it is working in collaboration with the authorities.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and wish to express our condolences to the woman’s family and loved ones. CPKC of Mexico is collaborating with the competent authorities and will provide all the necessary information for the corresponding expertise,” the railway company detailed in the press release.

He also shared a message on his social networks warning the population to stand at least 10 meters from the train tracks to see the route and avoid accidents due to the dimensions of the locomotive.

«CPKC of Mexico calls on people who have come to see the passage of this locomotive to take precautions and not approach or cross the railway track for their own safety and that of the crew. All people watching the train pass must always remain at least 10 meters away from the tracks. “People should never stand near or on train tracks, attempt to climb onto railway equipment or any railway infrastructure.”
