Kairos EV is a three-wheeled vehicle that always remains upright

This Kairos EV tricycle has three wheels, but it does not tip over, since it has a device that keeps it upright at all times… in theory, at least.

More and more people are opting for sustainable transportation, and electric three-wheeled vehicles are on the rise.

However, tricycles are known to be less stable than cars and prone to overturning when taking sharp turns.

Fortunately, a new tricycle has appeared that puts an end to these safety problems.

The Kairos EV three-wheeled vehicle

The Kairos EV, made by French designer Mathieu L’Hopitault, features not one, but two innovative systems to address safety concerns.

The Kairos has a modern three-wheel tilt design that keeps riders upright at all times.

The SIREMS Association, a French non-profit electric mobility group, is developing the tricycle, which is still in the pre-prototype phase.

It is designed for two passengers and has a delta configuration, meaning it has two wheels in the back and one in the front for steering.

This design is accompanied by a semi-reclined, feet-forward riding position, which helps distribute weight for improved balance and traction.

The Kairos also offers agility when leaning when cornering, as the rear wheels lean relative to its main body.

In this sense, its operation is very similar to that of a motorcycle.

But that is not all.

More features of the Kairos EV

The design also features a pair of Movable Lateral Elements (MLE) built into either side of the front wheel.

These wedge-shaped accessories prevent the vehicle from overturning, as they tilt when the tricycle leans in curves, acting as counterweights to prevent overturning.

In addition to protecting the Kairo from rolling over, MLEs also absorb impact during collisions and improve aerodynamics.

The second safety feature of the Kairo is the Programmed Retention Device (PRD).

Essentially, the PRD is a cockpit-mounted chest pad that prevents the rider from being sent flying over the handlebars if the Kairo crashes.

The device has a triangular shape and hinges at the front.

In the event of a rollover, the device unlocks, allowing the rider to be ejected out of danger.

When can it be purchased?

Philippe Girardi, founder of SIREMS, said: “Although security is the backdrop of this project, we do not want to offer a boring product.

“We have tried to ensure that each of the safety features also provides a visible benefit to the customer: more storage space, improved aerodynamics, a fresh design, new dynamic features and a new driving experience.”

The company expects the Kairos to be on the market in 2028 and to cost $32,650 (30,000 euros).
