How does it compare to what’s happening in the rest of the country?

Within the framework of the National Road Safety Day, the National Road Safety Agency (ANSV) published a preliminary report on the accident rate on routes and streets in the country and the alarming data it leaves in Argentina.

Serious events are reported daily, such as the 30-year-old woman who lost her life on Av. Circunvalación or the young man who died last weekend after a road accident on the Córdoba-Carlos Paz highway. In Córdoba, they are only the most recent in a long list, with an average that exceeds one fatality per day in this province.

It is a problem that in 2023 took 4,369 lives in the country, that is, 12 people died per day in road accidents, according to annual statistics prepared by the Statistics Directorate of the ANSV Road Observatory.

The same report details that in Córdoba there were 398 fatalities last year and 357 fatal accidents, exceeding the rates for 2022: 377 and 345 respectively.

In the case of our province, the data was provided by the General Directorate of Information Technologies and Statistical Analysis of the Córdoba Police.

June 10 is National Road Safety Day.

The data is very similar to that maintained by its own registry of The voice since 2007 and is based on official reports, police data and own sources consulted on road accidents.

Out of a population of 3,978,000 inhabitants, according to data from the last national census, and with a registered vehicle fleet of 2,820,567 vehicles, in Córdoba the fatal accident rate per 100 thousand inhabitants was 9, and every 10 thousand inhabitants was 1 .3 (8.7 and 1.2, respectively, in 2022).

Regarding fatalities, the rate per 100 thousand inhabitants was 10, and every 10 thousand inhabitants 1.4. (9.5 and 1.3 in 2022).

Another interesting fact indicates that fatal accidents in Córdoba occurred evenly throughout the year 2023, with October being the month with the highest fatalities. The numbers in the report show: January 26 cases; February 21; March 32; April 31; May 36; June 34; July 30; August 26; September 30; October 41; November 30 and December 20 cases.

City of Cordoba

One of every four deaths that occurred in 2023 in road accidents occurred in the Capital. According to the Road Mortality Report of the City of Córdoba, last year 93 people died in road accidents in the city.

The percentage coincides with the population: 39% of the provincial population lives in the Capital.

The data makes 2023 the year with the highest number of fatalities from this cause in the last three years and is 26% higher than 2022.

A federal problem

Official national statistics reflect that 4,369 people died in 3,642 road accidents throughout the national territory.

Of this total, it appears that the largest number of deaths were motorcyclists, with 4 out of 10 of the fatalities (40%). In regions such as the NOA and the NEA, the mortality of motorcyclists increases to 58% and 59% of the total victims, respectively.

Compared to other jurisdictions, our province is second in road accidents, only behind Buenos Aires, if the net amount is taken and not in proportion to inhabitants. Santa Fe occupies third place with a downward trend in the number of deaths, Mendoza is in twelfth place and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, in fifteenth place.

Motorcyclists represent the first type of user with the most deaths on streets and routes. In second place, those traveling by car appear, followed by pedestrians.

Regarding age range, 38% (the highest percentage) were people between 15 and 34 years old and, according to gender, 75% were men.

Regarding the characterization of fatal road accidents, 53% were due to collisions, 12% due to overturns and 11% due to pedestrian collisions.

46% of road events occurred on routes (mostly national) and according to the time zone, they happened in almost equal percentages, both during the day and at night.

Implement solutions

After the dissemination of this data provided by the provinces, the national organization proposed to implement public policies in the short and long term that generate fewer deaths and injuries.

Road accidents are a multifactorial phenomenon that can occur due to the recklessness of drivers, the poor condition of the roads, the distraction of those behind the wheel and the lack of knowledge about safe driving, or a combination of all of this. .

Strategies and actions for prevention, awareness, education and control will be the keys to reducing road accidents and their consequences. Although eradicating accident rates is difficult, some provinces, such as San Juan and Misiones, have managed to reduce their rates in recent years.

The solutions, for their part, also require the commitment of national, provincial and municipal organizations, in addition to the active participation of civil society organizations and the media.
