China’s Defense Ministry warns that ‘Taiwan separatists’ are destined for self-destruction

In a new chapter of growing tensions between China and Taiwan, the Asian giant’s Ministry of Defense issued a stern warning against Taiwanese separatist forces, pointing out that they are destined for self-destruction if they persist in their independence ambitions. The statement, which elevates Beijing’s bellicose rhetoric, comes in response to newly elected Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te’s recent assertions about the island’s right to self-defense.

Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, was categorical in stating that “the more aggressive the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists are, the faster they will end in self-destruction.” The official harshly questioned the notion of “self-defense” put forward by the Taiwanese authorities: “Taiwan is part of China. “How is it possible that Taiwan has the so-called ‘right to self-defense’?”

For the Chinese government, the statements by Lai Ching-te and other island officials about the possibility of exercising “self-defense” against the actions of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) are nothing more than a “show deliberately staged to embolden themselves,” which only reveals “his inner weakness.”

Zhang reaffirmed the PLA’s determination to take “resolute countermeasures against any provocation pushing for ‘Taiwan independence’,” comparing the separatist forces’ attempt to resist Chinese military might to “a moth jumping into the flame.”

The statements by the Chinese Ministry of Defense are part of the “One China” policy, according to which Beijing considers Taiwan a rebellious province that must be reintegrated into the mainland, by force, if necessary. This stance has led to frequent incursions by Chinese military planes and ships into areas near the island, in what Taipei denounces as intimidation tactics.

For its part, the new Taiwanese government, led by Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party, has reiterated its commitment to defending the island’s sovereignty and democracy, rejecting the “One China” principle and seeking greater international presence.
