Lima, June 14 (EFE).- The approval of a bill on energy in Peru could raise natural gas distribution rates by up to 28%, in addition to putting its massive distribution in the country at risk, he warned. this Friday the Peruvian Hydrocarbons Society (SPH).

The impact of the increase in rates could affect nearly 2 million users, 4,000 industries and businesses, as well as 400,000 vehicles converted to natural gas, the SPH detailed in a statement sent to EFE.

Bill 4565/2022 seeks to promote the diversification of the electrical matrix, through greater investments in non-conventional renewable energies, but, in the opinion of the SPH, it has not considered the impact on thousands of families, transporters and companies that see in the natural gas a key factor for their economies.

“From the SPH, we ask the plenary session of Congress to order a greater technical review of the proposal, in order to guarantee the safe, reliable and efficient supply of electricity supply, and promote the diversification of the energy matrix,” stressed the president of the SPH. society, Felipe Cantuarias.

In his opinion, if this project is approved in the plenary session of Parliament, “it would generate a decrease in the demand for natural gas for electricity generation; which will mean the reduction of the fee for the production of natural gas” for the southern region of Cuzco, at 354 million soles (about 93.7 million dollars or 87.6 million euros) in the next four years.

The impact would also be felt in the regions of Ayacucho, Ica, Huancavelica, Ucayali and Lima (where a third of Peruvians live), with an economic impact that will amount to 67 million soles (about 17 million dollars), always according to the SPH figures.

For Cantuarias, “the forced incorporation of renewable generation would affect the reliability and stability of the national electrical system”, taking into account “the increasing frequency of events such as the El Niño phenomenon, which directly affect the production of this type of energy.” .

Finally, the SPH reiterated its commitment to the use of clean energies, including renewables and natural gas, “considered a strategic resource for the energy transition”, but highlighted that the current legislative proposal “does not guarantee a safe, reliable and efficient”.

In this sense, he stressed that “generation with non-conventional renewable energy requires adequate planning to guarantee the reliability of energy systems”, which is why he requested that the bill be analyzed again in the corresponding parliamentary commission. EFE
