Dry, gusty weather will bring an elevated risk of grass fires in North Bay this weekend, National Weather Service experts said Friday, June 14.

A potential fire would be caused by a trough (an elongated region of relatively low atmospheric pressure) heading west and bringing gusty winds and dry air from the north, the weather service explained in a news release.

Although it is not expected to reach critical levels, and the weather service has not issued any official warnings or advisories, fire danger may increase, especially in grasslands.

“Larger fuels and wood still retain some moisture, but grasses and fine fuels are very dry,” they said. “Uncertainty persists regarding the extent of the impacts; Stay tuned to the forecast for updates.”

In the North Bay, including Sonoma and Napa counties, weather experts have medium-high concerns for fire risks that will persist from Friday night into early Monday.

Wind gusts could reach 20 to 30 mph (32 to 48 kph) in inland valleys, such as Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Napa, and up to 40 to 50 mph (80 to 96 kph) near the coast and in the Mayacamas mountains.

The strongest winds will occur overnight.

High temperatures in Santa Rosa and Napa will remain in the low to mid 80s, with lows in the 50s this weekend. Along the coast, temperatures will reach 60 degrees.
