The world of football is in mourning. Shock was generated by the news of Death of Matija Sarkic, goalkeeper for the Montenegrin national team and Millwall, an English Championship club, at the age of 26.
The causes are unknown. According to reports, the goalkeeper “died suddenly,” which has unleashed widespread grief.
Sarkic, born in London, had made 33 appearances for Millwall after arriving in mid-2023 from Wolverhampton Wanderers. In that sense, the club announced the death of the player with a heartfelt message: “Millwall are completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away aged 26. Everyone sends love and condolences to his family and friends during this sad time.“, they recorded.

The Montenegrin Football Association also delivered an emotional statement. The entity said it was “deeply saddened” by the loss of its “beloved Matija Sarkic.”
“Matija was not only a remarkable athlete but also a beloved teammate and friend. He was both the present and the future of our national team. His unexpected death has left us all shocked and in mourning.“, indicated the Montenegrin organization.
The few certainties about Sarkic’s death increased the shock. In that sense, the international press provided more details of the situation of the footballer, who was in the town of Budva, coastal area of Montenegro, when he suddenly fell ill during the early hours of the morning.
According to RTCG, The player died around 6:30 in the morning (local time) and they clarified that the police are investigating the circumstances of the death. “She went for a walk last night with his friends in Budva, had dinner in a restaurant and returned early to his apartment. When he got up around 6 a.m., he complained of feeling unwell, so his friends called the ambulance.“, they added.
