Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June because the date that has its origin in USA thanks to the initiative of Sonora Smart Dodd at the beginning of the century XX. Dodd, the daughter of an American Civil War veteran who raised her six children alone after the death of his wife, proposed honoring her father and all of her parents by hearing a sermon on the Mother’s Day in 1909. Although he initially wanted the celebration to be on June 5, his father’s birthday, it was finally established on the third Sunday in June. In 1924President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea and 1966President Lyndon Johnson made the date official.

In Argentina, the first Father’s Day was commemorated on August 24, 1958in honor of the birth of the daughter of General José de San Martín. However, in the decade of 1960the country adopted the American date of the third Sunday in June, a practice followed in much of Latin America and several European countries.
