Oil Spill Response highlights the drill at the Port of Las Palmas

Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL), the largest international cooperative that exists to address oil spills, specialized in providing preparation, response and intervention services, submitted its report on the fuel spill drill carried out this Wednesday in the Port of Las Palmas , highlighting the provision of resources and capacity to address environmental emergencies.

Two technicians from the entity attended the drill organized by Fedeport and the Port Authority of Las Palmas from the Integrated Control Center (Port Authority of Las Palmas, Maritime Captaincy and Maritime Rescue). The report prepared states that “it was shown that they have sufficient resources with Sapcan from level 0 to 1, and also sufficient capacity to manage the level 2 oil spill with the resources and experiences of Sasemar.”

The professionals, who had previously attended another of these tests on port soil, assessed a “significant improvement” in the knowledge and monitoring of the different emergency plans, which has allowed an increase in the complexity of the simulated risk (spill during operations in anchoring) and unite the participation of all competent administrations. In addition, they especially highlighted the “transparency” by replicating a third control room, made up of the companies that make up the Fedeport Bunkering Commission.

The representatives of all the administrations and companies participating in the exercise met again this Thursday to learn about the results of the report and share the conclusions of the experience. They all highlighted the opportunity for improvement that this project, which has been worked on during the last six months, has represented, and put on the table the possibility of continuing annually with this type of exercises, simulating new scenarios and associated risks.

The learning from this successful experience can also be shared with other entities and territories thanks to the video recording of all the details of the drill. This valuable material will make up a documentary, of which participants were able to view a 17-minute preview today, which will replicate the drill in real time. To carry it out, there were camera operators in each of the three Control Rooms, in the Advanced Command Post located on Las Alcaravaneras Beach, and drones that recorded the operations at sea and coast from the air.
